Carly Smithson - An Undiscovered Idol? A tattooed Irish coleen with blue eyes, black hair and a voice to die for is causing a huge stir in the USA on hit show American Idol. Simon Cowell sure aint no fan of Carly Smithson, but we were back in 2003 when she won a Meteor Award. Undiscovered talent you say? Hmmmm... Carly Smithson (nee Hennessy) Speaking to a picture agent in the US of A yesterday, we were asked if we had any archived photos of Irish singer Carly Smithson in our database. We were enthusiastically informed that she is "white hot in America at the moment." At first we came up with nothing. Then we looked up her maiden name and up popped these images of Carly Hennessy winning the 'Best Female Singer' award in the Meteors back in 2003. Jackpot. Carly Smithson (nee Hennessy) Now, we're not knocking one of our own but it turns out that this Dublin babe had a rather large MCA Records recording contract prior to 2003 when she released the flopped album 'Ultimate High'. At the time American Idol judge Randy Jackson was senior vice president of MCA, and very much aware of Carly... So, does she break the show's ethos of uncovering 'undiscovered talent'? Carly Smithson (nee Hennessy) Either way, Carly is certainly making waves and a name for herself across the pond. Each week there seems to be a new scandal breaking with the Irish singer accused of everything from being pregnant to being the 2nd gunman on the grassy knoll... We say keep the scandals coming, and keep Carly in... Sure she'll have a bag of new Meteor Awards this time next year.

Amanda – Australia April 20, 2008 - 01:26 I'm an Aussie who loves the Irish!!!! When I first saw Carly audition, she became my favourity and the reason to tune in next week. The Irish accent that came through in her singing made her an individual amoungst 'pagent' performances. She still remains one of my favouites...even though I don't believe we have seen her at her best!
